November 2004

EV MAY We were sorry to hear that our good friend Mrs Ev May has not been very well lately. Ev kindly provided the flowers in memory of Geoff, who used to play in our small worship band, on 17th October.

YOU WILL REMEMBER Sister Elizabeth's gesture in sharing the receipts from her published book "Especially for You" being items from her pen in "People's Friend". She specified that the money should be used towards worship, and so we are purchasing 24 copies of Songs of Fellowship probably the best of the modern hymn books, together with the music copy and a largeprint words only copy. We are grateful to Sister Elizabeth for this gift, which she gave to each church in the Circuit and others at Whitwell.

BEETLE The Pfungstadt Link Group Beetle Drive planned for Saturday November 20th has been cancelled.

SUNDAY SCHOOL We have been pleased to welcome two new families this month with younger children. Still room for more!

DISABLED TOILET is approaching completion with the fitting of grab rails etc., just leaving painting and floor covering to be carried out. The fire extinguishers have been checked and serviced, and the faulty flue to the kitchen water-heater has been replaced, and both that and the main boiler "Corgi" approved.

THANK YOU again to Cedric and Hazel Madin for the continued provision of flowers and shrubs outside the church front with some winter-flowening pansies. The welcoming exterior will soon be improved by a new notice board.

CHURCH STEWARDS The Church Council appointed Ruth Sadler, Becky Swallow and David Slater to be Church Stewards. Our other Stewards are Linda Slater, Door Steward and Hazel Madin, Communion Steward.

THE ORGAN given by Mr & Mrs Titterton was used at services earlier this month, but it has some hopefully smnall faults and awaits the visit of Mr Organ-repair man.

LADIES DAY at our Hall Road Church is Saturday November 20th. Details can he had from Nel.

October 2004

CHURCH COUNCIL meeting is on Wednesday, October 6th at 7.30pm.

HARVEST The Harvest Festival Service was enjoyed by a good congregation of children and adults. The display was of traditional Harvest produce, plus pasta, rice and tinned veg for Romania. The children sang Bringing in the Sheaves and the minister was the preacher. The donations received for the produce realized £45 for Methodist Homes for the Aged.

MR ERIC VAUGHAN is our preacher for Christmas Morning Service at 1Oam.

BEETLE The Pfungstadt Link Group is to hold a Beetle Drive on Saturday afternoon, November 20th, at 2pm at Mount Tabor.

SUNDAY SCHOOL restarted on Sept. 5th but numbers have been disappointing. Spread the word about our excellent Sunday School for ages from two-and-a-half years, which meets on Sundays, 10am - 10.45am

DISABLED TOILET A new sink and toilet have now been fitted, just leaving the addition of grab rails, tiles etc. to complete the job.

GAS SERVICE The gas boiler has been serviced and checked. That's fine but the water heater in the kitchen has a damaged flu which will cost £160 to replace.

SERVICES Rev. Gillian Robertson has been officially "welcomed" into the circuit and we look forward to her first visit to Mount Tabor on Sunday October 10th (10.45am). The service on October 24th is a special one for Mr. Mark North, part of his local preacher training includes an "assessed" service.

September 2004

SUNDAY SCHOOL MEETS AGAIN after the August break, and we will be delighted to welcome children from two-and-a-half years. We open with a mini-party on September 5th, from 10am until 10.45am. The autumn programme includes the revived Annual Prizegiving for attendance and the popular "Pick-a-Prize" Quiz game.

PERCY MYERS WEB ENQUIRY We were thrilled to hear from Trish Myers, researching her husband's family. She picked up our web-site in Auckland, New Zealand, listing Percy Myers, our minister in 1948. Thanks go to Mr. Gerald Sawyer who unearthed some interesting facts, and remembered that Percy had received the Maundy Money in honour of his work in the community. Gerald's reply in full may be found on the web-site - click here. Receiving this reply, Trish asks if anyone knows if Percy's son is still alive.

HOLIDAY CLUB SUCCESS Leader Mrs Nel. Shallow was delighted with the Children's Holiday Club at the beginning of August with up to 17 attending. Nel thanks those who helped, including the older children whose help was invaluable.

AUGUST ALL-AGE SERVICE was well-taken by Nel, on the Olympics theme, but disappointingly the children missed it! However a good number of adults appreciated it.

WELCOME to our new Superintendant Minister Rev. Gillian Robertson. The public Welcome Meeting is at Bolsover on Tuesday August 31st at 7.30pm. We shall welcome Gillian to New Brimington on October 10th at 10.45am for a Communion Service.

MR. RON GEE has "retired" from taking services on the Plan. He suffers from arthritis.

April 2004

MRS MURIEL RICHARDSON Muriel was due to go into hospital on Wednesday last for hip replacement surgery, and we wish her well as she returns home to Holymoorside.

WE WERE PLEASED TO WELCOME to our March 7th service Mr. Des Haynes. It was a delight also to welcome friends from Brimington Common to share the service. LUCY PEAT was presented with a certificate marking the completion of the first part of the Sunday School Teacher Training Course. Mrs Eileen Hill is her tutor

ENVELOPE SCHEME The new year for weekly giving envelopes is just beginning. If anyone feels they can help the church in this way - it guarantees a weekly income which can be "gift-aided" if you pay tax - you should contact David Slater.

March 2004

PREACHERS FROM FAR & WIDE We have two services this month with preachers who have a fair way to travel to get to Mount Tabor, so we hope for good congregations to welcome them. On Sunday March 7th at 10.30am Mr. Des Haynes of Brierley, near Barnsley is our guest preacher. Lilian and Denis met Des and his wife on holiday. In the afternoon Des will preach at Barrow Hill (3pm). At the end of the month, on Sunday March 28th the planned preacher is Rev. Jill Bowden of Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire.

WEDDING DAY On Valentines Day, Rev. Mark Coles married Ruth Slater and Adam Green of Matlock at a happy ceremony in the late afternoon. A reception at the Chesterfield Hotel followed, and the couple enjoyed a warm honeymoon in Cuba.

MEETINGS The Church Council met in February. A meeting to promote working together in our section took place and Nel Shallow hosted a meeting at her home to get to know each other and pool ideas.

OUR LAY WORKER Mrs Nel Shallow is planning events in the three Brimington Churches during Holy Week. 5th - 9th April. The Maundy Thursday Communion this year is at Hall Road. Lent Groups are also being planned to take place in our section - full details later. Nel's phone no. is 582218.

NEW STEPS Our rickety old wooden steps have been replaced by a new aluminium set which Trevor kindly arranged to pick-up for us.

February 2004

GIFT OF AN ORGAN An electronic organ has been given to our Church by Mr and Mrs B. Titterton. It had belonged to Barry's father George who moved to Brimington from Minehead, where he played the organ at the Methodist Church for many years. George had helped us out by playing at Mount Tabor for a Morning Service, but sadly he passed away quite suddenly. We are grateful to Beatrice and Barry for the gift. It "doubles up" as a piano.

THE WEDDING of Ruth Slater and Adam Green is to take place at Mount Tabor on Valentine's Day, February 14th at 3.30pm, conducted by Rev.Mark Coles.

WE WERE PLEASED to welcome Rev. Mark Coles for the Covenant Service, on good form - and pleased with the results of his eye operation.

THE WOMENS WORLD DAY OF PRAYER service this year is on Friday 5th March at 2.15pm at the Congregational Church, preacher Sister Ann Gilson

January 2004

HAPPY CHRISTMAS SERVICES! We had two particularly enjoyable Christmas services this year, both with large congregations. On the Sunday before Christmas we were again indebted to the brass Ensemble from Darley Dale Band. Our preacher was Mr Darrel Beresford. It was good to welcome Alan and Margaret (Storey) Simpson and Rachel Needham. On Christmas Morning Mr. David Wilson was the preacher, and Rachel Needham read the lesson "The Word was made flesh". She was joined by her sister Rebecca, who flew in on Christmas Eve, and her friend Erin from New Jersey. Mrs E. Hill was the organist, and the retiring collection for Methodist Overseas Missions.

THANK YOU very much for donations to the Panto

A CHANGE TO "THE PLAN" Gerald Sawyer and Gwen Cushing have exchanged appointments. Gerald is with us on January 11th, and Gwen on Feb 1st.

THE CIRCUIT PRAYER MEETING meets at Mount Tabor on FRIDAY JANUARY 16th at 7.30pm and then on January 26th at Bolsover, also 7.30pm.
