A MESSAGE FROM JACK Now that the redecoration of our Church has been completed, which everyone must agree has been a worthwhile venture, the small but loyal congregation would like to express their grateful thanks to Linda for adding the final touch to these improvements by providing the new floral displays in the Church windows, in addition to the central flower arrangements which week by week bring so much silent beauty to our worship. So thank you Linda, for sharing your love of flowers with us.
Jack Hardwick

A FEW MORE THANK YOU'S Thank you to Trevor for putting up the new blue sign above the church door - and for changing lightbulbs in the chapel where access is not easy. Belated thanks to Eileen for the organ front cover which is such an improvement, and have you noticed the lovely flowers that Cedric again planted outside the chapel - the winter flowering pansies have been a real splash of colour. We are indeed blessed in the willing helpfulness of so many friends. Thank you all!

THE NEW BLUE oval "Unity" board is a fine addition above the Church front door. Hall Road have also adopted the new sign, which started in late 1999 with the green "millenium" oval board.

REV GORDON & JULIE MORTON had a full house for their Coffee Morning two Saturdays ago. It was good to see Gordon feeling better, and our hope for him is a sustained period of good health.

REDECORATION FUND Thank you for more support for the Fund, now standing at £1892, towards the cost of £2760. There has been many appreciative comments on the bright "new look".

November 2006

WE LOOK BACK on our Anniversary Weekend with thankfulness. On Saturday, the Staveley and District Churches United Choir gave an exceptional concert of a very high standard, and on the Sunday Mr Richard Laws was our preacher for an evening United Service, when we were pleased to welcome visitors from the other Brimington Churches. Richard's daughter Angela led the prayers, Becky started the service with an Introit by Holst. Hazel and Noeline delighted us with their duets. We were indeed blessed and the continuity of 125 years was very real. Did we even catch a glimpse of timelessness as we remembered times, and saints, from the past?

JOYCE FAWCETT Please continue to remember Joyce in your prayers. She had a nasty fall at Chatsworth Lodge but wishes to be remembered to those who know her.

REDECORATION FUND Collections over the Anniversary weekend boosted the Fund by £422, making the total to date of £1842, towards the cost of £2760. The Fund will be kept open till then end of the year to enable any who wish to help to do so. Meanwhile we must again thank all who have been so genrous in giving. For our small congregation to have given so well that it now leaves us with £928 to rasie, is wonderful.

ALL-AGE WORSHIP The Church Council carefully considered the question of All-Age Worship. Over the last three years we have tried to involve the whole church in a monthly act of Worship. We have tried morning and afternoon slots. We have tried leaflet drops. With one or two exceptions we have always struggled - sometimes we have had no children. So it was decided that in the new year we would discontinue the monthly 10.15 All-Age Service and therefore all our services will be at 10.45am. We shall meet together, children and adults at special services throughout the year. These will of course include the Festivals of Christmas, Easter and Harvest. It is not a decision we have taken lightly, and we do hope for your support during the coming year, 2007.

PAINTING The Church and Schoolroom look bright and cheerful after the £2760 repaint. We thank Mick of RTB Decorating for a good, thorough job. Our first service back in Chapel was on September 10th with Rev Alan Morton.

HARVEST We had a good harvest this year, with Mr Dave Wilson, a good display and hearty singing. The traditional harvest produce resulted in £50 being given to Methodist Homes for the Aged, and there was a good quantity of rice, pasta etc for Mr Cawley to take to Romania.

SUNDAY SCHOOL We need more children! It would be great if you can encourage any newcomers.

WE REACH THE CLIMAX of our 125th year on the weekend of October 7th and 8th, and once again we appeal for your support. The dates are as near as possible to the actual one when the Church opened in 1881. The generosity of those who have given towards our repainiting has been wonderful. Our Redecoration Fund stands at £1370, will you help by giving in the collection plate - particularly on the Saturday. There is no admission charge but a collection will be taken. It is just possible that, over the weekend, we could raise £1000, leaving just a little to be taken out of the funds. Will you help towards this? Let's have a lovely weekend of thanksgiving.

April 2006

MRS WAITE The death occurred on Good Friday of Mrs. Margaret Waite, who had lived in the Railway Cottages on Station Road, Hollingwood for many years. Margaret took part in the very popular Ladies Concerts in the eighties, once memorably singing "Climb Every Mountain". To Carole, Shirley, Leslie, Tony and Christopher, who share Easter Day worship, we offer sincere condolences.

CANCELLED An unfortunate power cut across a swathe of Brimington, Hollingwood and Staveley meant a last-minute cancellation of our Palm Sunday service. We were left with no heat, light, or of course, power for the organ.

OUR EASTER DAY congregation of 25 shared hymns. prayers and songs led by David, and extended Communion taken by Eileen, following the illness of Rev. John Job, our appointed preacher. The children received eggs to take home.

REDECORATION NEWS On 15th July we are to have a Gift Day towards the redecoration of Church and Schoolroom, with Whitwell Male Voice Choir giving a Concert. On our Chapel Anniversary, 7th of October, Staveley & District United Churches Choir will give a concert and the following day our visiting preacher will be Mr. Richard Laws, for what is hoped to be a United Service. The Redecoration Fund has got off to a good start, £150 being given since the Appeal was made in our March Newsletter. Obtaining quotations for the work must now receive priority. Meanwhile please help make our appeal known.

February 2006

OUR JANUARY ATTENDANCES have shown a slight increase, averaging 11 for the first four Sundays, but the Sunday School continues to give cause for concern with 8 children on the Register. If anyone can help with recruitment in any way, or knows of any children who may like to come, please help us grow! Sunday School is a very important part of growing up, meeting and relating to new friends, singing, praying (so discovering we aren't the only pebble on the beach), making things, playing games together. Sunday School represents a very wide tapestry and the plus-point is we learn about Jesus. Our Church has always been a centre for Children, please help us maintain this worthwhile tradition.

THE CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING is on Wednesday February 15th at 7.30pm to be chaired by the Minister.

WE ARE PLEASED that although technically Nel. has left the Circuit, she is able to be with us for the All-Age Service on February 19th (10.15).

SNIPPETS OF HISTORY As the plaque on the Church front clearly states, Mount Tabor was opened 125 years ago this year. We know that people were meeting together before the October of 1881 when the Church opened - An early "Book of Offices" records an infant burial on February 19th, 1881, of Ellen Cartwright, aged 7 months. Then on August 8th, George Hoyland died. He was buried on the 11th aged 79. A note in the Book adds "His End was peace". Presumably these burial services would take place in the Cemetery Chapel, now used for storage. It was on the left hand side as you go through the arch, with the Anglican Chapel on the right-hand side. The piece of land bought by the first trustees had been bought by Staveley Coal & Iron Co. from the Chatsworth Estates. They in turn sold it to Mount Tabor for £24. 10. The Land Purchase Deed was signed on 27th June, 1881. It was to a busy summer that year!

CHRISTMAS DAY Congregation of 24 was the best for many years. Mrs May Hoyes led our service. Starting with the simple story of a poor families Christmas tree, May's message ended with the deepest meaning of Christmas. Nationally Church attendance at Christmas saw 43% of the population attending Church - a remarkable figure in a supposedly Godless age.

WE SAY A SAD "Goodbye" in the next two weeks to our Lay Worker Mrs Nell Shallow, who is leaving the Circuit to take up a new post in Sheffield. We wish Nell and her family "all the best" in the future.

JANUARY WEDDING IN MISSOURI Rachael Needham is to marry Paul Green next Saturday, January 7th at 2pm at Cameron Harvester Church, Missouri. Our love and best wishes for the big day and their future lives together go out to Rachael and Paul.

CAROL SING at Tesco with Brimington Churches Together raised £120

NEW MINISTER We are to have a new Minister from September 1st when Rev Mark Coles will be leaving us. GORDON MORTON is currently an Industrial Chaplain for S.Yorks Fire Service. With his wife Julie, daughter Emma, and Tommy his dad, Gordon will move to Juniper Close from Rotherham.

13 BOXES went to Eastern European children from Mount Tabor for the Operation Christmas Child Appeal.

PACKED More people than ever, around 80, filled the Church for the Candlelit Carols on the 18th Dec. Rev Mark Coles led the service and gave a thought-provoking address. As people came in the offer of a piece of Turkish Delight met them and Mark, starting with The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe went onto the heart of the challenge of the Christian Faith. The children did a Nativity tableaux, Becky sang, Ruth read from the Bible and Lucy and Shane gave a special reading "C is for Christmas". Ruth Green organized the Brass ensemble which Adam Green conducted. There were local people, children's parents, and old friends from the district, and the prize for travelling the furthest went to Margaret and Alan Simpson from Leeds (unless you know differently!)

ANGELA & SUSAN LAWS have had quite a year in which Angela has had successful eye surgery and gained a B.Sc., and Susan has taken up playing the cornet in Milford Haven Band.
