August 2005

A WEEK AFTER the devastating bombs in London touched so many lives, we opened the Church for prayer for two hours (Thursday 14th). At 12noon our minister led devotions including two minutes silence, coinciding with the remembrance right across Europe. Unfortunately next door's frontage was receiving a coat of tarmac when the Church was opened, and very noisy it was, but by 12noon the workmen had finished, so the "silence" was observed in peace.

NEW SCREEN A New "Pull-down" projector screen has been installed in the Hall by Rev Mark Coles. In the coming months an occasional All-Age Service will be held in the Hall. We hope it will appeal to children in their familiar room, rather than the more formal setting of the Church.

FRIDAY 2nd SEPTEMBER Fun & Games for the children in a recruitment evening for the Sunday School - Parents Welcome.

PREACHERS At the beginning of the month we were pleased to welcome Rev David Whitehouse to our Church. The following Sunday Mr Paul Richardson was back preaching after his serious illness, and he spoke on NCH Childrens Homes. For the All-Age Service, Mark ppp picked ppp prayer for his topic, the small p's were bullet points in our prayer-time i.e. petition, praise etc.

WE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS with a constantly overflowing header tank for the chapel central heating. This has been put right by Mr Doug Graves, who quickly found the source of the problem - an old Anniversary collecting box stored nearby had fallen in the tank and jammed the valve.

Our thanks to Brimington Common for their concern and generosity, and to Eileen, for sorting the repair work- on the "Gem" Our Hammond organ, sadly no longer of any use without a massive investment, has been given to the organ repairers

GIFT TO MOUNT TABOR We gratefully acknowledge the gift of £100 forwarded to our treasurer by County Councillor Walter Burrows. on behalf of Derbyshire County Council

CLIMB HIGHER, REMEMBERING GOD Our preacher on April 10th, Mr. John Laws, remembered being on the platform for our Sunday School Anniversary, and how, as you grew older, you climbed up the tiered platform until your head nearly reached the bold words "Climb Higher, remembering God". But what was behind the text? As John said, it is not to be found in any concordance. It was put there by the Sunday School Superintendant Mrs Tissington, and given the age it was first painted, the Victorian obsession with bettering yourself educationally seems a very likely answer to our question. This was the age of reading rooms, lecture halls and mechanics institutes. A great example of this would be fresh in the minds of those early Methodists. ln the parish of Brimington had lived a self-taught engineer who promoted education for all, George Stephenson, the "Father of the Railways". George died in 1848, Mount Tabor was opened in 1881. Always very conscious of his own lack of education, he laboured hard as an engine-wright to ensure his son Robert had the benefit of an education - a father's natural desire to want something better for his son. It's a good mental image, climbing higher up the Anniversary platform, but it is not unreasonable to assume that Mrs Tissingaton saw much that was humdrum around her, but that the opportunity was there for her young charges in the Sunday School to get educated, to climb higher in life, but all the time rememberine God.

March 2005

THE NEW NOTICE BOARD was put up on Feb.15th. It stands roughly where the old wooden one was, and is plastic coated rigid aluminium. The cost, which included erection, was £387.75.

THE DISABLED TOILET is at last complete. The total cost was £1760, and we should he eligible for some grant aid towards this cost. The toilet remains our "Ladies" but becomes "Unisex" for any disabled user.

IT WAS AGREED at the Church Council to launch a Bible Study Group, which Nel and Mark have offered to lead. It is important that we have a firm base for what we believe, and we do give all a warm invitation to the proposed group. Look out for details.

TSUNAMI APPEAL Collections in January totalled £251 forwarded by The Methodist Belief Fund, which ensures wise distribution. A big thank you to all who gave.

PEOPLE It was good to see Hazel Madin back at church last Sunday following her operation, and we hope she soon feels stronger. Edna and Richard Laws were our welcome visitors for the Communion Service on the 13th Feb. Ev May is still very poorly on the Durrant Ward at the Royal Hospital.

January 2005

A CHRISTMAS CRACKER
Christmas 2004 will be remembered for another excellent congregation of nearly 70 for the Candlelit Carols Service on the 19th. 500 invitations had gone out locally. Nel led the service with style and some assistance from the children. Our Brass ensemble kindly brought together by Mrs Ruth Green and conducted by Adam Green were great. Coffee, mince pies and a chat followed. It was good to see Denise. Margaret and Alan had travelled from Leeds especially for the service. The chapel looked lovely. May we just mention the angel over the crib, given last year by Lilian and this year the tree was given and decorated by Ruth. On a Christmas morning when snow had fallen, we were pleased to welcome a congregation of 23 for Morning Worship, truly of all ages from toddlers, children, teenagers, people in their twenties and every decade up to eighties enjoying the being together in church on this special day. The service was led by Mr. Eric Vaughan, who engaged us in a Christmas Quiz. The plate at the door towards Overseas Missions yielded £26. We almost had a white Christmas, snow falling two hours before the service, but there was a warmth inside the chapel which didn't just come from the radiators.

END OF A SAGA
Thanks to Ruth, our treasurer, who persevered many months, faxes, phone calls, site visits concerning the problems we encountered with the Water Board regarding the leak at the edge of the property, the matter is hopefully resolved with the receipt of a statement which more accurately reflects the amount of water we have used this last year.

NEWS BRIEFS

MR. BRIAN MORRIS has painted the disabled toilet, and blended in the paintwork over plastering (caused by having a wider door) All that remains to be sorted now is the floor covering which has to be slip-proof.
