December 2002

OVER £130 FOR CHARITIES WELL DONE to members and friends of our Church who have responded to appeals this autumn. Two separate appeals have resulted in £86 going to the Methodist Homes for the Aged. The Harvest Fruit and veg. proceeds were £45 going to the Methodist Relief Fund, and a large load of pasta, etc. was sent to Romania after the Harvest. lt is easy for a small congregation to think "There's not much we can do" or even to become inward looking but these excellent results prove we are determined not to fall into that trap. Incidentally, we hear that some of the charity lorries are experiencing difficulties at the Romanian border crossing.

SUNDAY SCHOOL Sunday School is looking forward to their annual pantomime visit to the Pomegranate Theatre on December 23rd to see Dick Whittington.

OCTOBER COUNT Our average attendance figures for the October count this year showed a slight increase of 10 adults and 12 children. Methodist Churches nationwide take part in this Count.

NEW YEAR On the first Sunday of 2003, we have our Covenant Service at 10.45am with Holy Communion.

UNITED SERVICE On Sunday December 1st, there is a Circuit Service at 6pm at Barrow Hill.

REMEMBRANCE We had an excellent service for "Poppy Day" and our 121st Church Anniversary. The children sang "Magic Penny" and gave a reading.

MY GRANDAD (by David Slater) Grandad Rankin, my mum's dad lived at Lockoford Lane and worked at the Midland Railway Station as a Clerk. He was at work when the Military was brought in to quell riots and this affected him a lot. One day he was heard singing by Thomas Wallhead, the choirmaster at Trinity Church on the High Street (now the Community Centre). He was roped in to sing in the choir. Thomas Wallhead wrote many hymn tunes, some used for the "Whit" Walks. Two of the tunes Brimington & Whittington are in older tune books.

A DIFFERENT HARVEST Preacher for our Harvest was Rev. John Job, and the children sang Whole world in His hands. New this year was the large amount of pasta etc. due to be with needy Romanian families in time for Christmas. Donations from other items on the display were given to the Methodist Relief Fund.

CHRISTMAS SERVICES Make a note of December 22nd this year. As well as being the shortest day, it is to be our Christingle Service at 4pm. Also the traditional shorter service will be held on Christmas Morning at 10am.

NEW NOTICE BOARD One of the recommendations of our Quinquennial Inspection was that the outside notice-board be replaced within the next year, so the Church Meeting agreed to this work being done. We were also advised to have our Fire Extinguishers wall-mounted, which Dronfield Fire Protection have done.

BRIMINGTON SSU The Brimington Sunday School Union used to have an impressive parade on Whit-Monday when the streets were decorated. In 1878 it is recorded that "Mr.T. Wallhead will meet any of the Committee in Ringwood Plantation on Saturday to pick the evergreen to decorate the Brimington Common Archway". Messrs Purdy and Brailsford agreed to meet him on Monday morning at 3am!

PARTY The hall was decked with red, white and blue for the Sunday School's Jubilee Party. 20 children and their friends enjoyed a disco with Mr Anthony Clifford, games and of course food. Thanks to donations all the costs were met.

JUBILEE SERVICE The Jubilee Service was attended by 26 last Sunday. Rev Peter Cross led the service, speaking on the origins of Jubilee, the children sang "The Ink is Black" and Mrs Eileen Hill was organist. At the close of the service the children received a Jubilee Mug. A good service, with echoes of 1977 when John Wall was with us.

JUBILEE MUGS A limited number of our Jubilee mugs are available, price £4. The china mugs have the official Golden Jubilee logo on one side in purple and yello, and our own church picture on the other.

SURPRISE VISITORS Surprise visitors on the evening of the Jubilee Party were Angela and Brian Hearnshaw, formerly of Sycamore Road. Unfortunately Angela is seriously ill, and your prayers and thoughts are valued by Angela and Brian.

HAZEL & EILEEN Hazel and Eileen have been brushing up on their German for their Pfungstadt holiday with the Brimington Twinning group.

DISABLED ACCESS A concrete ramp is to be installed shortly to give a pushed wheelchair access via the main hall door. This will then give disabled access to all our premises, on one level.

CUSHIONS FOR PEWS The remaining pews in church are to have seat cushions. with the same material as that used on the new church chairs. The foam inner has been generously donated by Mark Sadler Trevor's brother, and Eileen has volunteered to make up the cushions.

CHILDREN IN CHURCH Our Sunday School children shared the first ten minutes of the Mothering Sunday and Palm Sunday Services when all received an African Palm Cross.

GIVING TO OTHERS The World Church collections for Overseas Missions came to nearly £100, a £20 increase on last year. Pasta and flour brought to church last Sunday was due to go to Romania with other goodies. Our turn to host the Lent Lunches at the Church Hall raised £75 for Christian Aid. Thank you to all those who helped those who need it most. God loves a Cheerful giver.

CHURCH CHAIRS Last minute donations towards the Chair Appeal means that the chairs have been paid for in full without having to dip into the Church Funds. Thanks to all who have made this possible.

BERYL Older friends will be sorry to hear of the death of Beryl Boam (nee Knot) a popular Sunday School Teacher from Sycamore Road.

CHRISTMAS SERVICES REVIEW For our CANDLELIGHT CAROL SERVICE on December 23rd there was an excellent attendance of 57. The Darley Dale Brass Band Ensemble accompanied the singing, the children presented their nativity tableau, and Rev.Peter Cross enjoyed his chairmanship, speaking on "The Greatest Gift" he also reminded us that, like the RSPCA puppy, Mount Tabor is not just for Christmas, but for all the year round.

On Christmas morning, 17 came to church when Mr. Eric Vaughan was the preacher, speaking on "Surprises". A retiring collection supported the National Childrens Home

O YES THEY DID HAVE A GOOD TIME! The children's visit to Jack and the Beanstalk on Dec. 19th went well. The huge giant which drew gasps of astonishment from the audience failed to scare even our youngest children. Thank you to those who supported us with donations, keeping the cost to the church down, and ensuring a good time was had by all!

CHAIRS LATEST The order for church chairs has been placed with the manufacturer, Rosehill of Cheshire and should take about two months. There are just a few chairs left to pay for, if anyone feels they would like to help with a donation, or to "Buy -a-chair" at £55, please contact our Treasurer, Mrs Ruth Sadler.
